Cheyenne

She Has A Gift

By: Cheyenne Isom

Cheyenne created this song that tells the story of her struggles growing up as an only child with her mom who suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.  This was the first time Cheyenne had opened up about her traumatic experiences growing up. She said it felt good to “bring that out and basically show the world and tell the world my story,” especially since she knew “there are other people out there that are going through the same thing I am.”

Freedom Project Brain Café

Lost Child Excerpt – James Monteiro & Cheyenne Isom

The Freedom Project Brain Café examined issues related to incarceration, such as the disproportionate number of prisoners of color in the prison system, and the prison system’s default role as society’s solution to addiction and other mental health issues. The evening included poetry and personal stories from James Monteiro, a Providence native who grew up in the prison system.
